Autism Spectrum Disorders, Second Edition emphasizes the roles of communication, play, and social interaction in understanding and managing the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This comprehensive text can be used as a textbook or as a resource both for working professionals and families who are affected by ASD.

The book has two major parts: assessment and intervention. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework from the World Health Organization guides the approach to assessment while evidence-based practice guides the intervention chapters, with the intention of presenting models of intervention with a solid theoretical foundation and evidence of positive effects in children with ASD.

Each chapter begins with 3 to 5 key questions to guide readers’ thinking, revisited at the end of each chapter. A glossary of terms is included to facilitate understanding of key terminology. Additional resources are available online via an access code, including suggested readings, printable versions of selected figures and appendixes, and practice opportunities for the reader to apply the information presented.

Professionals in speech–language pathology, psychology, education, early childhood, special education, social work, pediatrics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, and audiology will find this to be a useful teaching tool and a valuable resource.
