The Responsive Teaching Curriculum for Parents and Professionals
Responsive Teaching is an evidence-based child development curriculum for children with autism and developmental delays who are younger than six. Parents or child development and mental health professionals who work with young children and their parents can use this highly flexible curriculum.
This Program Works
After 12 months of Responsive Teaching intervention children showed:
- 60% increase in rate of cognitive development
- 125% increase in expressive language development
- 150% increase in receptive language growth
- Even children with severe social-emotional problems made dramatic improvements in their social emotional functioning.
The instructional strategies at the heart of Responsive Teaching are easy-to-remember suggestions that adults incorporate into daily, routine activities with children. The strategies enable parents or professionals to continually, but gently, stimulate their child’s use of the Pivotal Behaviors that are the foundations for developmental learning. Children learn to enjoy and participate in their routine play activities and interactions.

- Pivotal Behavior Wizard for choosing objectives to teach
- Pivotal Behavior Profile for assessing student progress
- Intervention Session Plans for planning sessions with parents and children
- Responsive Teaching Planning and Tracking Form for planning sessions and recording student progress
The manual includes:
- Definitions for each of the 16 Pivotal Behaviors
- Explanations of facts relevant to the Pivotal Behaviors
- Discussion Points that can be used to review these facts with parents
- Descriptions of the Responsive Teaching Strategies
Use the Responsive Teaching Curriculum Planning and Tracking Program CD-ROM to:
- Develop Responsive Teaching intervention session plans,
- Maintain records of intervention activities, and
- Assess children's developmental progress
