PECS: The Picture Exchange Communication System
Lori Frost & Andy Bondy
PECS provides individuals who have communication difficulties with an effective and functional method of communication that allows them to use picture symbols for self-expression. The emphasis on a social approach sets this picture-based system apart from more traditional systems. PECS has been used successfully with children and adults with autism and other developmental disorders.
The Training Manual contains information on the rationale for and the implementation of each phase of training, instructions for constructing the pictures, discrimination training tips, data sheets, and a parent handout. The Video provides an overview of potential benefits and examples of each PECS training phase in home, school, and community settings with a variety of communicative partners. The Pics for PECS CD has more than 450 full-color drawings. These JPEG images can be imported into a variety of programs, including Picture This . . . Pro, which provides formatting flexibility. The Communication Book is a durable 25.5cm x 23cm 3-ring binder that is picture ready and contains two insert pages and an extra Velcro sentence strip.
The PECS Kit includes a Training Manual, Video, Pics for PECS CD, and a Communication Book.
