Patterns for Success in Reading and Spelling
A Multisensory Approach to Teaching Phonics and Word Analysis
Marcia K. Henry and Nancy C. Redding
Patterns for Success in Reading and Spelling consists of structured, sequential, multisensory lessons based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. It is designed for teachers, tutors, aides, and others who work with students with special reading problems. The book follows a sequence ranging from beginning letter-sound correspondences useful in the primary grades to the Latin and Greek word parts necessary for reading middle school and high school subject area text and literature.
The curriculum consists of more than 120 lessons designed for small-group or individual instruction. Lessons include card drills and decoding and spelling instruction as well as activities to enhance linguistic awareness, reading comprehension, and composition. Each lesson contains card drills, review of previously learned patterns, and introduction of new patterns or rules, and provides ample opportunity for decoding and spelling.
The accompanying Student Word Lists contain words, phrases, and sentences focusing on patterns presented in each lesson. Words in these books are written in larger font size for easier readability by students.
