"This third edition expands language sampling for preschool and school age children as well as provides chapters for specific genres, grammar exercises, and normative data for spoken and written language. The purpose of this book is to explain and teach language sampling of children 3 years of age to 18 years old. The book is intended for both speech-language pathologists and students studying to be SLPs. Dr. Nippold offers a wealth of information that can be used by both students and practicing SLPs.

The book is divided into two main parts. Part I includes eight chapters with topics covering the importance of language sampling, general procedures, and then four specific chapters on conversational, narrative, expository, and persuasive discourse and one last chapter on autism spectrum disorders. Part II offers chapters on grammar review and exercises. The first three chapters cover words and phrases, main and subordinate clauses, and sentence types. The last three chapters focus on units of measurement and analysis. There is also an appendix that provides an answer key for the exercises in chapters 9 to 14, which is extremely helpful to better understand the topic.

The updated third edition of this text is very much needed in our profession. The use of language sampling is not sufficiently used for two main reason: 1) SLPs feel they do not have enough time and/or 2) they are unsure how to analyze the samples. Dr. Nippold provides sufficient information to meet both of these challenges. As a professor in a graduate SLP program, I will be using this book with my next cohort. As a clinical practitioner, I will also be using it to further my knowledge of language sampling for children 3 to 18 years of age. This is a great resource for any pediatric SLP."
