The ROWPVT-5 is an individually administered, norm-referenced assessment of how well persons ages 2 years, 0 months to over 85 years can match a word that is heard (in English) to objects, actions, or concepts presented in updated full-colour pictures in a multiple-choice format. The test consists of 192 items presented in a developmental sequence that reflect concepts with which people currently have experience through home, school, or media. The ROWPVT-5 features additional items for younger children, as well as for older adults.

The ROWPVT-5 was normed on a representative sample of 1,800 individuals. The ROWPVT-5 has been co-normed with the EOWPVT-5 to provide a comprehensive assessment of expressive and receptive vocabulary. Scores can be combined to create an overall measure of one-word vocabulary.

Administration and Scoring
The ROWPVT-5 can be administered in about 20 minutes. Age-related starting points and ceilings minimize testing burden. Scoring is easy and straightforward, generally taking less than 5 minutes. Raw scores are reported as standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents.

Reliability and Validity
Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.77 to 0.98. Test-retest correlations were 0.89. The ROWPVT-5 was shown to differentiate individuals with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, aphasia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and speech-language impairments from typically developing peers.
