Overview

Previously known as the Vestibular Learning Manual, the Vestibular Lab Manual, Second Edition provides a review of all major of areas of basic and advanced vestibular evaluation. It is designed to be a systematic, practical application of theoretical knowledge commonly taught in vestibular curriculum of graduate audiology programs. The book is full of high-quality pictures of equipment, patient positioning, and outcome data.

Key Features:

  • Case studies allow the reader to apply diagnostic results to develop and strengthen clinical problem-solving and interpretation skills
  • "Guided Practice" and "Reflection and Review" exercises facilitate active learning of concepts
  • Spiral-bound workbook format allows for ease of use

New to the Second Edition:

  • Three new chapters covering:
    • Video head impulse test (vHIT)
    • Canolith repositioning techniques
    • Reporting results Effectively
  • Updated references, oVEMP protocols, and images

This easy-to-use manual is part of the Core Clinical Concepts in Audiology Series and is of great value to audiology students as well as an excellent refresher for practicing clinicians.

Review

  • Ashley Gaal Flagge, Ph.D., Au.D., University of South Alabama, Doody's (September 2018):
"**Description** The first edition of this book, titled Vestibular Learning Manual, was published in 2011, and covered many aspects of clinical vestibular care. This second edition covers newer clinical tests, such as the video head impulse test (vHIT) and the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP). The book is divided into chapters based on specific diagnostic tests used in a vestibular evaluation, and each chapter concludes with specific clinical exercises to be performed, as well as questions regarding the tests. There are also brief sections on canolith repositioning and vestibular rehabilitation. **Purpose** The purpose is to give a succinct overview of diagnostic and rehabilitative vestibular audiology, with a focus on active learning of concepts. This is accomplished quite well in the book, as each chapter devotes a brief space to the overview and rationale of the test, and then quickly moves into specific exercises designed to assist students and clinicians in becoming more comfortable with diagnostic procedures commonly used in vestibular clinics. The "Guided Practice" sections at the end of each chapter have detailed instructions to complete exercises, and the "Reflection and Review" sections that follow ask readers to integrate the information learned in each chapter with the overall picture. This book would potentially be very useful in clinical settings, as clinicians would not have to spend significant time searching through lengthy books for assistance with a specific issue or question. **Audience** The target audience is lab instructors, students, and clinicians working in a vestibular/balance assessment and/or rehabilitation setting. The book briefly describes each diagnostic test, along with a brief rationale for each test, and then refers readers to supplemental books for more in-depth information. The author explicitly states that the book is intended to "give practical guidance and confidence to students and clinicians." It accomplishes this goal well -- the chapters are succinct, to the point, and practical. As both a clinician and educator, the author is able to bridge the sometimes difficult gap between theoretical vestibular concepts and clinical applications. **Features** While there are some areas that are slightly lacking in information (canolith repositioning maneuvers) due to the brevity of the manual, overall, the book meets its purpose well. Case study examples near the end of many chapters require readers to integrate case history information and patient complaints with diagnostic results to make an accurate assessment of a patient. The final section, "Putting It All Together," gives several case study examples with complete diagnostic results and then asks specific questions regarding the assessment and diagnosis. This section also offers students (and clinicians) valuable assistance on professional report writing, a very necessary skill. Overall, the book is clear, succinct, and full of excellent active learning opportunities for both students and clinicians. **Assessment** This is a needed update in an ever-changing field. As research guides clinical practice in new diagnostic techniques, books also must continue to update material to provide the most relevant information. As a book designed primarily for use in clinical settings, this updated edition does just that. While the information in this manual is not nearly as thorough or in-depth as other, more comprehensive books, such as Jacobson & Shepard's "Balance Function Assessment and Management, 2nd edition," that is not the goal of this publication, which is stated from the outset. The clinical and educational utility of this manual is high, and the author does an excellent job of referencing more in-depth books when needed. 4 STARS!"
